Meaning of ISO 45001

ISO 45001 is an international standard that is used predominantly by big businesses. They are not applicable in Australia until they are adopted here. The first step in this process is when they are published as joint Australian/New Zealand Standard. This has now happened. Soon the government will move to legislate to refer to it in the WHS Act. It will replace the the now outdated Australian Standard the AS/NZS 4801:2001. So businesses need to start to implement this newer approach to integrating safety. This standard introduces a systems-based approach to Safety and starts to develop a consistent approach across all business areas from HR and finance to safety.

AS/NZS ISO 45001:2018, Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use has been published following discussions with industry and regulators across Australia and New Zealand. The CEO of Standards Australia, Dr Bronwyn Evans said,

Australian experts contributed heavily to ISO 45001, working with their international colleagues to deliver a standard outlining international best practice in the management of workplace safety. Ultimately, organisations of every size and in every industry have guidance available to achieve a minimum level of workplace health and safety thanks to the publication of this standard.”

AS/NZS ISO 45001:2018, Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use is intended to provide a framework for workplace safety to benefit employees and to reduce risks in the workplace.

Work is also under way to scope what additional guidance could be provided on AS/NZS ISO 45001 to support organisations and individuals utilising the standard.
